For the next month or so, life went on rather predictably, without much changing on the farm. In the rest of the world, however, it was a different story. I was still watching the news. For several months we had been slipping into a pretty severe recession. Gas prices were ridiculous and people were losing jobs left and right. Perhaps in response to the worsening conditions, the public was embracing our example. Sky wouldn’t take any credit, but I think it was very likely that even in the span of a month, his broadcasts were influencing culture. There was a popular push to localize food production, and a number of grassroots groups were popping up in rural locations, mimicking the very systems we had put into place. Sustainability became a common theme on radio talk shows and newspaper editorials nationwide. We were making a difference from afar, and I was satisfied with that. After such a stressful year, I was happy to be done with the whole Harbinger Reserve, savior of the world thing.
During one of her weekly interviews, Jamie Taylor asked Sky how he felt about the overwhelming response to his media presence. He seemed almost upset that she put the mantle on his shoulders.
“Obviously,” Sky answered. “I think it’s marvelous that people are taking responsibility for their own well-being, but I think we here at the farm are simply participants in a necessary reaction to the growing strain on the current system. We didn’t start this; it’s not some new and novel concept. I’m just glad to be a part of this important and essential trend, and I hope we can continue to play a supportive role into the future.”
Afterward, I asked him about it.
“Look, it’s great that everybody’s jumping on the bandwagon, here,” Sky responded. “But it shouldn’t be because of me. I only said all that stuff that day to get Vivian to trust me. I mean, it is what I believe, but I only said it because I thought that what she wanted to hear. I was just buying time. I didn’t ask for the role of social revolutionary. I just want to get back to work.”
I could see where he was coming from. I certainly didn’t want to talk to the press. I might have liked it at one time, but I was always afraid they would ask me about Kelly, or worse yet, that someone would find out about Micah. So, yeah, it would have been nice to have been left alone…but things don’t ever go the way you’d like.
